2005 ANNUAL MEETING MINUTES

 

 

The meeting was convened at 5:32 p.m., Saturday, January 29, 2005 at the Ala Wai Palladium Ballroom.

 

1.         ATTENDANCE:  Officers: Chairman, Vice Chairman, Treasurer, and Festival Registrar.  The following clubs were represented: High Hopes, Hi-Lo Plus, Lava Klinkers, Maui Mixers, Pali Twirlers, Rainbeaus-'N-Belles, Slewfoot Promenaders, Tsunamis, and Square Wheelers and Hayseeds.

 

2.         MINUTES:  The Chairman asked for additions or corrections to the minutes of the January 9, 2005, meeting. There being none, the minutes were approved as presented.

 

3.         TREASURER'S REPORT:  The Treasurer reported that as of January 20, 2005, the Federation's net worth, before Festival expenses, is $13, 456.24.  Festival expenses include cuer and callers fees and escrow holdings for trail-in and trail-out activities. She noted that the donation of $100 to DOSADO.COM was approved in appreciation for their support in advertising Hawaii Square Dance activities.  The Treasurer's Report was accepted as presented.

 

4.         COMMITTEE REPORTS: 

a.  40th Aloha State Festival:

      (1) Registrar's Report: Henry Staehle reported that as of January 28 there were 236 registrants for the Aloha State Festival. He said that 71 had signed up for the KBay Luau, with 34 on the bus; 78 for the Wednesday night Trail-in dance; 16 for the Tsunami's Whale Watch cruise with 9 on the bus; and 40 for the Sunday night club dance. So far 83 Festival badges, 53 date bars and 66 Rover badges have been sold. He noted that a number of walk-ins usually show up on Saturday night.

                 (2) Chairman's Report:  Buster reported that it appears to be a very successful festival, so

far. Although Jack Pladdys, a featured caller, has not been able to attend, other callers, including Hawaii's Andy Scott and Bob Van West visiting from San Diego, have filled in for him. 

b. USA West Convention 2006:  Tim Voss reported that a Kick-off dance has been planned for March 5, 2005, at the McCoy Pavilion with pre-rounds from 6:30 - 7:00 p.m. and square dancing from 7:00 - 9:15 p.m. Al Shaw and Steve Barber will cue and Jim Kline and Steve Sullivan will call.  Admission fee is $5.00, or proof of registration. Advance registration is $35 and after March 5, 2005, Convention registration will cost $55.

 

5.         CORRESPONDENCE:  None.

 

6.         OLD BUSINESS:  Insurance:  Buster reported that he has been unable to speak personally to Irene Ferreira for the 2005 insurance quote. However, last year's Federation insurance cost $1,040.

 

7.         NEW BUSINESS:

            a.  Federation Dues:  The Chairman reported that the current dues of $10 for each club member has adequately covered the Federation's administrative costs and recommended that this figure be retained for another year.  The comment was made that dancers who belong to more than one club have complained about paying twice.  The Chairman explained that a current roster of members from each club is maintained and they are covered under the insurance policy.  He reminded club representatives that dues are due in February.  It was agreed that no change would be made in the dues structure.

            b.  Square Dance Events:  Dave Fullaway reported that Ace Mark, cuer on Oahu for many years, died in Kona last year.  Bill Peters, who died recently on the mainland, is featured on the back cover of the Festival program.  Dave noted that two squares of dancers had performed Friday at 6:30 a.m. with Linda Coble in the Ala Wai Ballroom.  Channel 2 News, which has always supported square dancing, featured the event from 6:30 to 8:00 a.m. on Friday.

            c.  Election of Officers:  The Chairman announced the annual election of officers and asked for nominations from the floor.  He noted that the By-Laws require that elected officers' terms of office be staggered and said that he and the Vice Chairman would not be continuing to serve on the Board next year.  There being no response from the floor, he presented the following slate of nominees to fill the two vacancies:

Nominations were closed, and the above slate of officers were unanimously approved.

           

            8.         CLUB REPORTS AND ACTIVITIES

                        a.  Square Wheelers:  Dave Lemon reported that the Square Wheelers' new caller, Jerry Quam, is doing an excellent job and members are enjoying the dances. He invited local dancers to join in a pre-cruise dance at the Radisson Prince Kuhio Hotel, Maui Room, from 7:30 -10:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 2.   Cruise callers are Dan Prosser, Bob Harrison and Cuer Linda Prosser. Admission is free, validated parking is $5.00.

            b.  Pali Twirlers:  Janet reported that the Luau by the Bay was very successful with 71 attending. As usual, everyone had a good time and they plan to continue the event next year.

            c.  Tsunamis:  Tim reported that 22 people had signed up for the cruise with 14 on the bus. He expected that more would sign up at the Saturday night dance.

            d.  Lava Klinkers and Slewfoot Promenaders:  Bill Yoeman announced that the Lava Klinkers were dancing at KMC on the first Sunday of each month from 3:00-5:00 p.m.  He said that he donates his time and the hall is free, the only stipulation being that the dancers eat at the restaurant afterwards.  The next Hot Foot Stomp will be held at KMC next October with Norman Moorehouse calling.  Bill said that 11 people had signed up for a new plus level club on Monday nights. He noted that he has been working with handicapped people for about six months and is teaching them to square dance in wheelchairs.

            e.  Maui Mixers:  Dave Fullaway reported that the Maui Mixers are dancing from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Thursdays   They are looking forward to dancing in a new hall which is now being built.

            f.  Rainbeaus-'N-Belles:  Deed Reimer said that the club is dancing every Thursday evening with between 12 and 20 dancers.  He said they would be holding their traditional St. Patrick's Day dance on March 17, but for only one night.

            g.  High Hopes: Ruth Fullaway reported that the club is dancing once a month at the Senior Hall.  Classes started in September. They are not hosting their usual Maui-No-Ka-Oi dance this year, but would try again in the future.

            h.  Hi-Lo Plus:  Michi Ryan reported that three or four plus squares are dancing every Sunday from 1:30 - 4:00 p.m. with pre-rounds.  A Mardi-Gras dance has been planned for Feb. 6th.

 

9.         NEXT MEETING:  The next meeting will be announced by the new Chairman after consulting with the Board.  Members desiring to attend Board meetings should contact the Chairman.

 

10.       ADJOURNMENT:  The meeting adjourned at 6:20 p.m.
