The

in the bank. Festival expenses and the Clubs’ escrow accounts,
reflecting payment for special events collected by the Federation, will
be deducted after the Festival. The Treasurer’s Report was accepted as
presented.
4.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
41st
Aloha State Festival:
a. Registrar’s Report: Henry Staehle reported that the
Festival was going smoothly with everyone enjoying the excellent callers
and cuers. He said so far there were 186 registered dancers including 5
who were complimentary. 69 registered for the luau and 39 for the
Sunday night trail-out dance.
b. Chairman’s Report: Chairman Henry Staehle reported
that figures for the Festival were down from last year probably due to
the USA West Convention held in August. Sound equipment for the
Festival was rented from Jerry and Andy has donated two speakers and
stands.
5.
CORRESPONDENCE: None.
6.
OLD BUSINESS:
a. Insurance: An invoice for our liability insurance
has not yet been received. Dave Fullaway reported that he had spoken to
our agent and she is working on it. The insurance covers all clubs in
the state for visitors and facilities but does not cover members.
7.
NEW BUSINEESS
a. Federation Dues: The Chairman reported that the
current dues of $10 for each club member is covering the Federation’s
administrative costs and recommended that this figure be retained for
another year. Administrative expenses cover insurance, phone hotline,
P.O. Box and Web page, postage and printing. After discussion, it was
moved, seconded, and unanimously carried to keep the Federation dues at
$10 per member.
b.
Election of Officers: The Chairman announced the annual election of
officers. After a short discussion, it was moved, seconded and
unanimously carried to retain the same slate of officers for the ensuing
year, as follows:
Henry Staehle and Wilma Seeman, Co-Chairmen
Barbara Tatsuguchi, Vice Chairman
Janet Granich, Secretary
Brenda Powell, Treasurer
c.
Public Relations: Dave Fullaway complained that no Community Dance was
held on Saturday afternoon this year as in past years. It was noted
that last year there was little support for the dance and in preparing
the program it was felt the time could be better used for workshops.
Dave said he felt that it was an important part of our public relations
program and volunteered to head the dance next year. It was agreed that
a publicity chairman was needed and club representatives were asked to
look among their members for volunteers. Mike Doan volunteered to take
charge of this effort.
d.
Support of Club Special Events: Lack of support for club special events
was discussed. It was pointed out that only two from Oahu attended the
last Hot Foot Stomp and only four from Maui have attended the current
festival. Dave Fullaway said he hoped that a Maui No Ka Oi dance could
be held next year.
e.
Club Contributions from Special event profits: It was noted that the
Federation no longer is in financial difficulty and it was suggested
that the agreement between the Federation and its clubs calling for a
30% rebate of special event profits be reviewed. Time being short, it
was agreed to revisit this subject at a later date after a final
accounting is available.
f.
Ala Wai Ballroom reservations: New administrative rules regarding
rental of the two Ala Wai Ballrooms are being adopted by the City’s
Parks & Recreation Department. It is not known whether we will be able
to keep our time slot for the Festival next year. It was agreed that it
would be a bad idea to cancel next year’s Festival based on a low head
count this year. It was also agreed that someone should make an effort
to attend the Parks & Recreation Department’s regular meetings so as to
keep abreast of any changes in rules.
g.
Next Festival: The current contract with the callers and cuers seems to
have worked out well for both parties. It was agreed to again offer
$3.00 a head and $25/day for three days for a rental car next year. It
was also agreed to ask the same callers and cuers back again next year.
h. Hawaii Display Booth at National Convention: At this time it
is not known who from Hawaii will be attending the National Convention
in North Carolina. Kim and David have already signed up and will accept
the flyers and material from the Hawaii Visitor’s Bureau if no one else
is available.
i.
Bonus for Callers and Cuers: The suggestion was made that because of
the low attendance this year a $100 good-will bonus be offered to the
callers and cuers if it appears that after a final accounting the
Federation can afford this amount. This would cost the Federation
$400. It was agreed that this was a good idea and should be considered
at a subsequent meeting.
8.
CLUB REPORTS AND ACTIVITIES
a. Square Wheelers and Hayseeds: Dan Seeman reported that the Square
Wheelers and Hayseeds continue to dance from 6:30 to 9:15 p.m. every
Sunday at the Ala Wai Ballroom.
b. Pali Twirlers: The Luau-by-the-Bay was very successful and enjoyed
by all, as usual. The Pali Twirlers have 12 members and are very active,
dancing A1 and A2 every Thursday night from 7:00 – 9:15 p.m.
c. Tsunamis: No report.
d.
Maui Mixers and High Hopes: The Maui clubs hope to host another Maui No
Ka Oi Festival after the new ferry starts up and more people are
traveling. The Maui Mixers are sponsoring a live band contra dance with
instruction from 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. and dance from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.
e.
Paradise Shufflers: Mike Doan reported that the Paradise Shufflers have
22 members and 32 class members, dancing every Saturday night at the
Manana Community Park. He said that most of the class members are home
school kids from families that like to do things together.
9.
NEXT MEETING:
The next
meeting will be held on Thursday, February 22, at 6:00 p.m. at Pohai
Nani.
10.
ADJOURNMENT:
The
meeting adjourned at 5:30 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Janet L. Granich
Secretary
