Hayseeds & Square Wheelers

Honorary Certificate Commending the Hayseeds and the Square Wheelers for their Promotion of Square Dancing in Hawaii

“Friendship set to music” is how David Lemon of the Square Wheelers dance club describes square dancing. A social activity that traces it’s roots back to the French and English royal courts, western square dancing became prevalent in Hawaii through American servicemen stationed here during World War II. In true “local” fashion, our island residents have taken it into their hearts and made square dancing an enduring part of our community.

Square dancing is an activity that is recognized worldwide with clubs in countries such as Japan, Sweden, and Germany. Standardized movements allow dancers of every background to participate, forming a bond that transcends all language barriers through music, dance, and fun.

In promoting square dancing as an activity, the Hayseeds and the Square Wheelers have performed for numerous organizations and will host a “Tenderfoot Dance” in June to extend the benefits to other interested residents. Dedicated to their weekly dances, Hawaii’s square dancers are committed to perpetuating an activity that brings friends, laughter, and music, together to create a dance that everyone can enjoy.

Therefore, on behalf of the people of the City and County of Honolulu, the Council commends the Hayseeds and the Square Wheelers for their efforts to promote square dancing in Hawaii and for keeping our citizens happy, healthy, and socially active.
